Can there be decay underneath a crown?

Crowns are an excellent way to protect a tooth from fracture and therefore extend its’ longevity. The tooth structure on which the crowns rest, is still vulnerable to environmental factors such as acidic attacks from bacteria and sugar. Decay can occur on the edge of a crown and leak underneath the crown. Also, if the biting forces on the tooth are very strong or improperly loading the tooth, the tooth could be weakened from underneath and decay. Crowns are vital to protecting teeth, but one still has to come in and have them checked and maintained in order for problems such as decay not to reoccur.
